In providing psychiatric care, Dr. Matos pays attention to your general health, when needed he communicates with your primary care doctor and other consultants about your chronic and often complex medical problems. He will make sure his recommendations are in line with your general health. Dr. Matos started his training in Internal Medicine prior to transferring to psychiatry and he was the Chief Resident of Psychosomatic Medicine during his training in the Yale New Haven Hospital. Psychosomatic medicine is the link between medicine and psychiatry, and it is one of Dr. Matos interests.
Crisis Management
Dr. Matos Santana was the Section Chief of the Psychiatric Emergency Rooms at Yale and worked in this setting for 5 years. Dr. Matos will be able to assess your psychiatric needs and determine the appropriate level of care. He will be able to provide guidance, important tools and do his best to keep you patients safe, however not always will he be able to keep patients in crisis given the limitation of a solo private practice.
Psychiatric Disorders
The management of anxiety disorders (panic attacks, general and social anxiety) mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder, psychosis and even some personality disorders are among the focus of this practice. Dr. Matos has a particular interest in trauma and PTSD. He is trained in many psychotherapies including Cognitive Processing Therapy and has developed the sensitive language to help you process trauma. Dr. Matos will offer the psychotropics that can help you in the management of your psychiatric conditions.
Psychotherapy / Medication management
In addition to Dr. Matos strong biological training, he also has training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. The psychiatric assessment come from a perspective of these theories of mind but with a strong biological structure. Taking into consideration the genetics, the neuropsychiatric symptoms as well as the environmental factors and your life experiences. He will explore evidence-based treatment options which will include psychiatric medications. Remember you can also be helped by decreasing or discontinuing medications that are no longer helping or are not necessary for your condition.

If you have an established relationships with a therapist, Dr. Matos is happy to collaborate with your therapist in your care. Some patients will be only interested in medication management and Dr. Matos can help with that.
